Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Laboratories (ATL) has been selected by DARPA to lead a research project called Reliable Analytics for Disease Indicators (ReADI). This project will help the team understand pre-clinical indicators of developing health disorders.

The ReADI project is being conducted to understand how continuously measured signals from smartphones could be used to detect human health status. We are interested in learning more about factors involved in different health problems in order to understand how best to identify and address health concerns rapidly, specifically using non-invasive measures gathered through everyday smartphone use.

By participating in this project, you will be providing data that will help improve our ability to assess individual readiness and health!

Volunteers will be entered in a raffle each month for a chance to win various prizes valued at up to $300! Examples of possible prizes are Apple iPads, Bose SoundSport headphones, and Amazon Echo Dots. Your chances of winning will vary between 1:10 and 1:50 depending on the value of the prizes each month. Frequently Asked Questions
How anonymous is the data?

• We have designed the study to make the data as anonymous as possible. Your research coordinator will provide you with an anonymized participant ID that will be used in place of your name for all data collection and storage. There will be no more than 3 “keyholders” – project persons entrusted with access to the mapping of your name and participant ID. This mapping is necessary for providing rewards or following up if any issues arise.
• To maintain anonymity, you should not reveal your participant ID to anyone else.

How long is the study?

• The study is ongoing through 2021. We would like for participants to be enrolled for at least 2 months.

What will I have to do if I join the study?

• You will first review and sign the consent form and then receive a link to the initial survey (takes ~30 min) along with instructions to download the application. You will then receive daily surveys – no more than 10 questions a day, typically less than 5 minutes to complete.

That’s a lot of data! What if I’m not comfortable with how much data is being collected?

• You have the option to opt out of any features you’re uncomfortable with. Please see the last question for descriptions of how each data type is handled and protected.

When I installed the app, I didn’t get asked to approve a specific data type listed in the consent form or on the flyer – are you recording it?

• No. Currently, not all of the data types listed are implemented in the app. If you are not prompted to enable or disable a data type listed, then it is not available for collection. This may change over the course of the study, at which point the app will notify you and request permission.

Should I tell others that they’re being listened to (if audio recording is enabled)?

• Every state has laws on this matter, and we are covering states that require you inform all parties by disabling these features based on GPS.
• Audio data can only be collected if (1) you enable those features, and (2) GPS confirms you are not in a “two-party consent” state. Two-party consent states: CA, CT, FL, IL, MD, MA, MI, MT, NV, NH, PA, WA

How is my data handled and protected? How will it help?

• General:
  All data is tied to an anonymous participant ID. We are collecting data at various sites, both within and external to Lockheed Martin, and the only difference between IDs is the number itself. Data is encrypted on the device and is also encrypted in transmission to the ReadiServe infrastructure.
• Proximity and location:
  GPS location data is collected. GPS data is obscured by changing the integer portion of the GPS location.
• Phone calls:
  Data that is collected regarding phone calls is restricted to metadata, such as time of call, duration, and phone number called/received. Phone numbers are hashed – we just want to know how many unique numbers are called and if there are patterns.
• SMS Messages:
  Metadata, such as time message was sent or received are collected. Content may be processed, but does not leave the phone. Features that will be transmitted regarding content may include number of words, counts of word in specific categories (e.g. pronouns), counts of specific words (e.g. sick).
• Audio:
  Short audio samples are recorded and encrypted for temporary storage on your device. Processing is done onboard to pull out information about frequencies, general loudness, cough/snore detection, number of words, counts of word categories (e.g. pronouns), counts of specific words (e.g. “sick”. The audio sample is then deleted and only the computed features are stored to be pushed to the database.
• Application usage:
  Metadata, such as how often your phone is locked/unlocked, apps are opened (name and category), and time spent in apps.
• Photo Gallery:
  Images in your photo gallery will be assessed for metadata, such as when and where pictures were taken. Location information is obscured. Images do not leave your phone and are never visible to any researcher.
• Touch/Gesture:
  Information about how you interact with the phone, such as timing and position of touches and gestures is collected. No information about what buttons are being pressed or the result of the interaction will be collected.
• System Information:
  Battery, CPU use, WiFi connections, and available storage space will be collected. WiFi network names are hashed. These indicators are monitored to optimize processing and data upload. Cell tower bindings and WiFi network information will be collected to provide basic location data in the absence of GPS.
• Calendar, Facebook and other social media:
  Content may be processed, but does not leave the phone. Features that will be transmitted regarding content (i.e. from twitter posts) may include number of words, counts of word in specific categories (e.g. pronouns), counts of specific words (e.g. sick). Further, for calendar information, we will collect metadata, such as appointment times, locations (obscured), number of guests and whether you made the appointment or were an invitee.

Privacy Policy
Data CollectionImmediately following installation, ReadiSens will not collect, store, or transmit any personal information from the device on which it is running. ReadiSens will upload reports when the app crashes. These reports contain information about the state of the app when it crashed, and ReadiSens developers will use these crash reports to improve ReadiSens. These reports do not contain any personal information. After you load a study into ReadiSens, ReadiSens will begin collecting data as defined by the study. You will be notified when the study is loaded and is about to start, and you will be asked to confirm that you wish to start the study. This confirmation will summarize the types of data to be collected. You may quit a study and/or uninstall ReadiSens at any time. Be aware that ReadiSens is publicly available and that anyone can use ReadiSens to design a study, which they can then share with others. Studies have the ability to collect personal information, and you should exercise caution when loading any study that you receive.

Do not attempt to use ReadiSens to record confidential communications. Short audio snippets may be recorded as part of some ReadiSens studies that you choose to participate in for purposes such as cough detection, environmental loudness and social interaction frequency. All audio recordings will be processed on your device and the full contents of the recording will not be accessible for use in a ReadiSens study, or by you. Only summaries or features of the recordings will be used in, or will be accessible as part of, a ReadiSens study, like number of words, counts of word categories (e.g. pronouns, verbs), or counts of specific words. If you are in a location where recording a confidential communication is likely or if you suspect that a confidential communication is taking place, you must close or otherwise disable ReadiSens.

Data UseData collected in studies run by Lockheed Martin are used according to the policies set forth during the consent process, which limit use of all data to the specific purposes of the study. All data are used in aggregated analyses to protect the privacy of participants.

Data SharingData collected in studies run by Lockheed Martin may be shared with research collaborators according to the policies set forth during the consent process.

Data Retention and DeletionData collected as part of the ReADI Study will be retained until completion of the DARPA Warfighter Analytics Using Smartphones for Health (WASH) program. You may email the study coordinator at any time to request deletion of your data. To do this, tap the study within ReadiSens and select the email option.

Children’s PrivacyStudies run by Lockheed Martin are not designed with the intent to attract the collection of information from children under the age of 18. We ask that children under the age of 18 not apply to participate in this study.

CaliforniaIf you are a resident of California as defined in the California Code of Regulations (18 CCR § 17014), you have the following rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (“CCPA”:

Effective January 1, 2020, the CCPA allows California residents to request: access to their personal information in a portable and readily usable form; disclosure of the specific categories of, and sources for, personal information that the company has collected about you; the business or commercial purposes for collecting the personal information; the categories of third parties with which the information was shared; and, deletion of your personal information, subject to certain exceptions.

You must verify your identity before we will fulfill your request. As a part of this verification process, government identification may be required. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request under the CCPA on your behalf. In order to designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, you must provide a valid power of attorney and the requester’s valid government-issued identification.

You have the right to make a request two times in a 12-month period, free of charge. We will respond within 45 days of receiving your request, unless we request an extension. In the event a 45-day extension is needed, we will notify you of the extension within the initial 45-day period.

As defined by California’s ‘Shine the Light Law,’ California residents may annually request and obtain information free of charge about what personal information is disclosed to third-parties for direct marketing use within the prior calendar year. Lockheed does not sell or share your personal information with other businesses for direct marketing.
