The managing director of wheat exporter AWB, Andrew Lindburg, has conceded that the United Nations was deceived over Australian wheat contracts.

Mr Lindburg made the concession after being taken through a memo about a board briefing.

It records that $US1.3 million had been paid to an English-owned company called Tigris, which had assisted AWB in re-establishing $1 million worth of wheat sales to Iraq.

Another memo detailed payments to the Jordanian trucking company, which were added to the per tonne price of the wheat.

Under intense question, Mr Lindberg finally conceded that the United Nations had been deceived because those details were not divulged when it approved AWB contracts.

As the Tigris company mentioned above was the bagman for the bribes and it is a criminal offence in Australia to bribe a foreign official then the ex BHP directors who ran Tigris must all be in line for criminal charges.
It will be interesting to see if this happens and also whether any DFAT employees and federal ministers are named as involved.
