It's not just the shareholders. There is a great story to be told here, with this being probably the most important thing New Zealand has accomplished since Tenzing beat Hillary to the top of Everest. Anybody who says that perceptions of a business are unimportant is simply naive. I am not advocating spin or bullshit; just a moderately competent effort to explain to shareholders and the general public, i.e. potential future shareholders, the potential and future of this company. It no doubt has the fundamentals in place, but over the years, the share price has almost always fallen on the receipt of good news. That points to a failure by management to explain to the many mum and dad investors the meaning of what is going on. It's a holistic approach, but the reality of modern business is that success goes not only to those who are proficient, but to those who can persuade others that they are. Perhaps we could at least try a bit of that here, and I will not have to put up with seeing 10% of my retirement funds disappear in a few hours because the company in which I have invested seems incapable of communicating good news.
