It is worth mentioning, however, that regardless of whether the Grandis deep coals are calcareous or not, the application of supercritical CO2 as a medium for conducting hydraulic fracturing in coals has led to significant improvement in fracturing performance. Supercritical CO2 has the ability to diffuse much deeper than water into a formation, thereby helping to create a more intense fracture network. Supercritical CO2 also creates wider fractures and has an advantage in minimising relative permeability issues. (For those of you who are not familiar with PVT and supercritical fluids, when a fluid such as pure CO2 exists in the supercritical region, it exists at a pressure above the CO2 critical pressure and also above the CO2 critical temperature.).
