The reason they've had auctions were that the market was tight with high prices but their contracts were forward sold with a delayed pricing calculation meaning that they had to sell at below market price.
The BMX auctions allowed them to benefit from far higher sell prices.
The market is not tight anymore. What you want to do is reduce sales to prevent the price from going down further. If there was a lithium cartel like for oil they would all agree to reduce production so that price would go back up.
