An interesting, small, placebo-controlled trial has been conducted by the Lambert Initiative, investigating the effect of CBD in managing alcohol use disorder.
Twenty-two participants with alcohol use disorder received 800mg per day of CBD or placebo over a 3 day period.
The effects of CBD versus placebo were measured on (i) psychophysiological, craving and anxiety responses to alcohol and appetitive cues; (ii) tolerability measures including cognitive functioning.
Both psychophysiological indices and self-reported alcohol craving and anxiety were measured. Relative to placebo, CBD sessions were significantly associated with elevated parasympathetic nervous system activity across the task and reductions in both anxiety during cue exposure stages and alcohol craving after cue exposure. There were no significant differences between CBD and placebo on executive functioning performance.
