I think this is the more likely scenario. The Board wanted a new CEO with more focus on commercialization and he may have been offered Chief Tech Officer but saw this as a step down. Even if there's some bad blood I cant imagine the Co would have wanted him to go completely given the ramifications that would have for the SP.
I actually hope this is how it went down. Because if I thought that going was initiated by him (assuming there is no pressing personal reason, which frankly Im skeptical of) I'd start having some very serious doubts about how "ground breaking" this AXE technology really is.
