Basel III significantly elevates the status of physical, allocated gold by classifying it as a Tier 1 asset and a High-Quality Liquid Asset (HQLA), similar to cash and government bonds. This change means banks can now hold physical gold as part of their core capital reserves without incurring additional capital requirements. This reclassification is a key component of Basel III, which aims to strengthen the global banking system by enhancing capital requirements and liquidity standards..

I wonder if one day the banks can hold it in the ground as a semi-liquid asset for collateral. (or soon, as just another bank product)

If it's proven up, and costs are knowen to get it out, then I don't see why not. Small caps could borrow from banks against gold in the ground.

Things might move fast if central banks keep loading up and using gold to back trades. When physical gold runs out they might come for the 'ground' vaulted stuff!
    A whole new market. @ $5,000 gold.
    - why not.
Hey, they invented mortgage backed securities..on a bunch of house owners who were likely to bail on thier mortgages. I think gold in the ground would be a better bet!
Old Quantum Metal, could get the one ounce / one crypto idea off the ground with bank finance..
