Have you ever heard of Ohms Law? Voltage equals current times resistance. That's why you can use smaller diameter cable with 1000 volts compared to 415 volts. Until 25 years ago all underground mines had a reticulation voltage of 415 volts. Australian miners were the first to switch to 1000 volts because of the numerous advantages, ie, smaller cables which are cheaper and easier to install, less copper windings in motors and less voltage drop allowing fewer substations for stepping down HV to 1000 volts.
