With 5m outstanding shorts as at 27 July, the telling figures on any short covering will come as ASIC reports outstanding shorts for 29 Jul onwards, & particularly yesterday with the relatively large turnover towards 1m shares.
But whichever way you looks at it, even if short covering (ie buying) contributed heavily to the rises in the last 4 trading days (with total turnover well under 2m shares), there are still going to be a truckload of underwater shorts still outstanding.
