Diggers & Dealers 2023: Pilbara Minerals wins Digger of the Year Award

Pilbara Minerals has taken out the coveted Digger of the Year award at Wednesday night’s WesTrac Gala Dinner in Kalgoorlie.

The award, which wrapped up the annual Diggers and Dealers Mining Forum, recognised Pilbara’s “outstanding” year at its Pilgangoora lithium project, about 120km south of Port Hedland. It increased its sales volume by 68 per cent in financial year 2023.

Allkem was crowned Dealer of the Year after its $16 billion merger with Livent Corporation in May, while the GJ Stokes Memorial Award went to industry veteran Neil Warburton for his “significant and lasting contribution” to the mining industry.
Mr Warburton was recognised for his “leadership and support of the next generation” during his 40-year career, which began with Western Mining Corporation in Kambalda.
He went on to hold senior positions with Barminco for 12 years, including almost five years as chief executive. Under his leadership, Barminco became the largest underground hard rock contractor in Australia and West Africa.
Mr Warburton has served on many resources company boards, including five years at IGO following the $1.8b acquisition of Sirius Resources. He continues to serve on the boards of several junior explorers.

The Emerging Company Award was presented to Patriot Battery Metals, which is focused on advancing the Corvette Property in the James Bay region of Quebec, Canada.
The project has a maiden mineral resource estimate of 109.2 million tonnes at 1.42 per cent lithium oxide. It is the eighth largest lithium pegmatite mineral resource in the world.
