Torrens is NOT a basket case, yes its expensive to drill due to the BS of doing business in Australia. WMC thought it had as much potential as Olympic dam.
Flying equipment in via helicopter was plain stupid, but thats Australia today, it was not the case in 1970. I know as I worked for Atlas Copco in the 1970's as an engineer/manager we supplied the gear to WMC.
