IMO he's been put there to defend one set of Chinese interests, the original lot, against another set of Chinese interests, hence the China savvy legal eagle.
Nick can't do anything much to improve the Dy grade, or resource size, economics of the project but no doubt he can maintain NTU's snappy line of PDF's.
