Infratil advises with great sadness that Infratil's Chairman David Newman
passed away this afternoon in Wellington. Infratil's Chief Executive, Marko
Bogoievski commented: "Our thoughts are with David's family during this
difficult time".
Marko further noted that David had made an outstanding contribution to
Infratil as a founding director and during his 9 years as Chairman. His sound
advice, business acumen, governance, relationship skills and strong moral
compass would be missed by all those at Infratil and associated with
Infratil.
David was a founder director of Infratil in 1994 and became Chairman in 2004.
He was a director of exceptional governance capability with the skills
required to deal with difficult situations and strong-willed people. While a
director of Infratil he was for a period also the CEO of the Institute of
Directors and through the Institute, as well as his governance roles, will
have left an indelible impression on New Zealand business.
Before becoming a director of Infratil, David had an extensive career with
BP, including as Managing Director of BP New Zealand. His oil sector
expertise was instrumental in Infratil and New Zealand Superannuation Fund's
highly successful purchase of Shell's downstream NZ assets in 2010, which is
now Z Energy.
David's ability to meld industry and accounting expertise with governance and
relationship capabilities has been of crucial importance over the years for
Infratil and its subsidiaries.
David was Chair of Wellington Airport and Infratil's European Airports. In
the former capacity he helped cement trust and acknowledgement between the
private and public interests. In respect to Infratil's airport investments in
Europe, David was a strong advocate of finding supportive investors to take
over from Infratil and played an instrumental part in developing
relationships with the Scottish Government. David was hugely supportive of
his management teams and built strong local relationships wherever he went.
David will be greatly missed by all those at Infratil and H.R.L. Morrison &
Co.
