Not sure what you’re referring to - he was terminated as Exec Director by the board... making him demoted to non exec director... he could only be removed from the latter role through a vote from shareholders or by resigning himself... obviously he preferred to resign than go through the embarrassment of having shareholders vote him out at an EGM.
