you have to own shares before the ex div date. if you buy shares on ex div date, no dividend entitlement for you.
Using TER as an example, the most current dividend ex div date was 24 November 2022. If you bought shares on 24 Nov, you dont get the dividend. If you owned shares on 23 Nov (at close), you get the dividend.
