Hi Peejay2
Really its in the fact that within my portfolio very few stocks are not sold at some point thus realising a capital profit or loss. The biggest winners I have that keep pulling up my performance are those stocks I havent had to sell. The CSL's of this world sold COH - stupid me. The other category is LIC's and there the likes of ARG , MLT spring to mind.
The key takeout for me is that a LIC has far more chance of staying within my portfolio if it keeps satisfying what it does or what part it fulfills.
IN GC1 I believe that we have a manager who has built a great team and that team has a performance and work ethic that will hopefully keep this stock in my portfolio for many years thereby cheating the ATO of sharing in its success.
That is worth an enormous amount to me as these stocks that stay in the portfolio really make up for my mistakes.
This stock fits the bill for me at the smaller end of town where I don't even have time to research and even if I did it's unlikely I would get an offer before its listed. So as long as they keep doing what they set out to do hopefully the ATO won't share in this success.
To illustrate SFC which is really a family owned company that has 3 arms - construction products, Howe leather and property was a stock we found early 2016 when it was around $5.20. We noted that they were moving and consolidating leather production in Slovakia so we thought that that was a great thesis taking costs out and looking like a step change. They got that all done and even sold part of the construction products now they are looking to add a part of their business into investing in other assets and much like SOL we hope to stick with the investment for a long time. That may well become one we continue to hold if it can work effectively. The drawback is that it's a share that is illiquid. This share has pulled me out of a few scrapes when a few that I invested in didn't really fly in fact going the other way.
