You are spot on - when ceasing to be a resident for tax, any shares held are deemed to be sold at that date & a CGT event has occurred. Conversely you reacquire those shares at their market value when returning as a tax resident, given they were never actually sold.
Boz - if you give me an email I’ll send you a good article which will assist. Will save you $$, as you’ll understand tax advice faster post reading. Plus it will Help you realise if the accountant you deal with knows their stuff, as this is not a vanilla situation.
