"the worst part is the massive increase in the cost of labour and threat of industrial action where unions have been holding many companies to ransom with some ridiculous demands not just for pay but for working conditions where they get to spend a lot of doing very little".
What a load of nonsense. CEO and exec pay has outstripped workers pay for many years. The vast majority of productivity gains have gone to company profits, not wage earners. The unions have very little power these days. It's not the 70s now.
Wages are increasing slowly, well below what they could be considering the very low unemployment numbers and demand for labour. Materials and energy costs have gone thru the roof, but that is everywhere and certainly nothing to do with unions.
The vast majority of workers are not in unions and many in the industry are contractors. If companies want skilled labour now, they have to pay for them. That's supply and demand, or does that only apply to big business when they put prices up?
