Well according to the USGS there is an approximate 36 million tonnes of undiscovered Santiago Tract Porphyry Copper in the Carribean islands, of which Cuba is the largest. So it can be assumed it will carry the lions share and for reference as to what a porphyry copper super pit looks like I'll direct your attention to Escondida in Chile.![]()
Undiscovered porphyry copper / polymetallic9resources—CU_PORPH_TRACTS feature class
As part of a global copper mineral resource assessment, the USGS Mineral Resources Program (MRP) analyzed two deposit types which, when combined, account for approximately 80 percent of the world’s copper supply; porphyry copper deposits alone account for about 60 percent and sediment-hosted stratabound copper deposits account for the other 20 percent.
Table 16 shows characteristics and model estimates for several of the tracts having the greatest estimated mean 9In this context, the term “polymetallic” is used to denote mineral resources covering several discrete potential recoverable metals extractable from a mineral resource.metal content for each of the three sub-regions—these tracts and data are those shown in the CU_PORPH_TRACTS feature class.
In 1978, J David Lowell proposed an exploration program along the porphyry copper belt between Chuquicamata in the north and El Salvador in the south.[7] Minera Utah de Chile and Getty Mining (Chile) formed a joint venture to carry it out. On March 14, 1981, 'Pozo 6' the last scheduled borehole in the program,[5] hit 52 metres of 1.51% copper at a depth of 240 metres and discovered the main Escondida orebody.[7
The Escondida pit is 3.9km long, 2.7km wide and 645m deep. The Escondida Norte pit is 525m deep.
Minera Escondida (which means 'hidden' in Spanish) is a mining company that operates two open pit copper mines in the Atacama Desert, 170 km southeast of Antofagasta in northern Chile. It is currently the highest producing copper mine in the world. Its 2007 production of 1.483 million tons of the metal was worth US$10.12 billion,[1] mainly as metal in concentrate, but some as cathode, and was 9.5% of world output and 26% of Chilean production, according to the US Geological Survey's preliminary estimates of 2007 world mine output.[2]
