A quick read of mineral resource estimates on Wikipedia is enlightening.

All the drilling results will be evaluated for reliability and the results used to project what may exist in between. Various statistical techniques can be used for this purpose, each with advantages and disadvantages. Special purpose software is used to do this and typically 3D visualisations of deposits can be generated.

One of the purposes of all this work is to try to keep a lid on fraudulent/exaggerated claims based on “salting” of samples and wild extrapolations which have caused bankers and investors a total loss in a short space of time. It makes sense therefore that the MRE is likely to proceed any deals.
