Well I got involved in gold exploration in WA in 2007 around Laverton when I was still green, I'm a Resource geologist these days specialising in narrow-vein gold but still have a keen interest in grassroots exploration.

The 'greenstone belts' that commonly host gold deposits are actually ancient relicts of the original Archean basement rock. They are sometimes called "shields" or "cratons". The most significant cratons occur in West Australia (Yilgarn craton), Canada and West Africa. The reason they're a big deal is that the period in the Archean around 2650-2800Mya coincides with a prolific period of gold mineralisation.

The greenstone belts in the Yilgarn Craton will have a longer history of exploration than in places like Cote d'Ivoire, and I'm pretty sure large tracts of them in West Africa have probably never been explored using modern techniques. This makes it pretty exciting for a company like Mako, especially if they can get 1-2 decent discoveries under their belt (no pun intended). It still requires a lot of geological due diligence, drilling in the right areas and a bit of luck.

A couple of discoveries in the 500K-1.0Moz range would be great, maybe Tchaga falls into this category we just don't know yet. The true World-class deposits (>5.0Moz) are very rare and difficult to find, but again you can never rule out a new one being discovered.
