In normal drilling - you can expect a pressure gradient close to that of water at an equivalent depth. Calculations are done, safety margins added and approvals are sought. These calculations are also reviewed by the regulator. Santos are no dummies in this regard and the rig was thought to be fit for regular pressures. In this case significant pressures have been encountered and as a result a higher specified rig is now required. What happens down hole cannot always be predicted. This is exceptionally encouraging.
