Does anyone here have a good understanding of unconventional oil and gas?
It has been said on this forum that the bleeding of gas is an indication of a tight rock. This would be a negative for the deposit, as oil and gas need to be able to permeate through the rock for extraction, even with hydraulic fracturing.
Yet the announcement said that bleeding of gas is indicative of strong hydrocarbon saturation (duh) and considered favourable for certain other critical parameters, without stating what these parameters are.
I would think that rock porosity (open porosity, more to the point) would be pretty high on the list, as all the hydrocarbon in the world is not going to be any good if it can't move though the rock and be extracted. It seems to me that bleeding of gas out of chips after they've been brought to surface would require some confined pore space, as otherwise the gas would all have disappeared on the way up, but that does not mean there's not heaps of open porosity in the rock as well. To me, the announcement sounds very good. There was never going to be oil gushing out of the shale. After all, that's what fracking is all about. I'd very much like to hear your thoughts on this.
