I only have limited knowledge of drilling Oil and Gas wells.
But my only thought is the pressure encountered is greater than the drilling rig can safely handle.
From my understanding they normally have a drilling mud pump. Apart from pumping the drilling mud down it also try's to make the pressure closer to balanced to prevent a blow out. So perhaps this pressure is greater than the pump can handle?
would need a proper O/G guy like PSI or some one to really make sense of this I think.
