Debt reduction and short covering are two likely reasons for GEM's recent rise.
A third influence is likely the increased quality of the board. Board chair Mark Johnson seems to be a substantial step up from the previous chair in terms of business experience and (ahem) perceived ethics. The new board member (David Foster) also brings large business experience with strong financial knowledge and skills.
