New Virotec Technology to help Timber Industry

Copper Chrome Arsenate (CCA) is a well-established preservation technique that has been widely used across the world for several decades. Timber treated with CCA includes products for residential, commercial and recreational use. Copper (Cu) and arsenic (As) are used in the preservation process as fungicides and insecticides, while chromium (Cr) fixes these chemicals into the wood.

Evidence is mounting, however, that the use of CCA can pose a significant danger to human health and the environment. Arsenic, for example, is a known carcinogen. As a result, regulatory authorities are imposing stricter controls on the manufacture of CCA, its use and disposal.

After the timber preservation process is completed using CCA, the treated timber is typically stored outdoors. After rainfall, contaminated leachate is formed, collected and contained within ponds.

Recently, Virotec demonstrated that its ViroFlow™ Technology is now the best treatment available for CCA contaminated sites. Furthermore, it's application is simple, easy and economical to apply.

Virotec's patented ViroBond™ reagent - which can be applied in a simple, direct method to contaminated bodies of water - removes the danger of copper, trivalent chromium and arsenic by immobilising these metals into an insoluble, non-reactive sediment.

For Virotec it is another a "world-first". For the timber preservation industry it is a new, economical and practical solution to a challenging, environmental problem.
