Ann: Efficacy without Toxicity, page-8

Is this what Melrose said? Then it showed a fundamental lack of understanding how antibiotics work on his part.

"It’s usual that antimicrobials are strong in safety, and weak in efficacy - or vice-versa."

This statement is just plain wrong. When penicillin initially came out, it was the safest antibiotics, yet it was highly efficacious. Toxicity is not related to efficacy, it relates to the molecular structure. There are a lot of safe and efficacious antibiotics, and there are lots of toxic and not very efficacious antibiotics around.

"So it won’t go into the bloodstream like a normal drug will. Not getting to the bloodstream means it cannot manifest any toxicity."

If it won't go into bloodstream then how can it be used to treat sepsis? Maybe what is left is some diarrhoea disease, which could be localised in the gut lumen. But some diarrhoeal disease do cause sepsis, or just go away by themselves, so the "drug" is not very useful in either case.
