Good article Aussie, I have pondered this same thought with Tesla's battery system. Seems like a waste of space and materials, having all those individual batteries linked together, why not make one big battery?
Perhaps stability is the issue there. I don't know, that's well outside my sphere. It's clear a lot if smart cookies are working towards advancements in that area.
However, most alternate techs I read about are primarily focussed on the Cathode side of the equation and the materials contained. I know Cobalt has been hot lately, but Lithium seems to be the mainstay for the electrolyte in light and mobile battery solutions, therefore a safer bet IMO.
Some are also looking at the addition of Silicon to the graphite anode. Being a handy byproduct of LMax, could get interesting as a serious value add over time.
Definitely an interesting space.
