At the end of November, European Lithium announced that no detailed environmental impact assessment (EIA) was required for the project according to a decision by the Carinthian provincial government. However, it is questionable whether this will remain the case. As DER STANDARD has learned, the municipality of Frantschach-St. Gertraud has lodged an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG). Deutschlandsberg, the Koralm Water Association and the environmental NGOs Virus, Alliance for Nature and Global 2000 are also taking legal action.
Even if the court does not consider an EIA procedure to be necessary, further permits from the mining authority would be required for the extraction - and hundreds of millions of euros to finance the project.
