After the state of Carinthia determined that no environmental impact assessment (EIA) was necessary for the planned lithium mining on the Koralm, there is now a first appeal against this decision.

The complaint was lodged by the nature conservation organization "Alliance For Nature" (AFN) based in Vienna. It has lodged an appeal, which is why the Federal Administrative Court (BVwG) now has its turn, as the organization announced on Friday.

Specifically, "Alliance For Nature" is of the opinion that the declaratory decision is unlawful "because the individual case and cumulative assessment was only carried out in accordance with the Austrian EIA Act (UVP-G 2000) and not also in accordance with the European EIA Directive (EIA Directive)". Specifically, the project is feared to have a negative impact on people, biodiversity, water and forests. The organization also expects "considerable noise and, in particular, traffic pollution for the duration of the project".

The specified four-week deadline for complaints runs until December 26, 2024.
