Could be part succession planning but personally I think its more for performance improvement. Succession planning is prudent but its generally more of a 'plan' e.g. identifying a successor to take over as CEO when the time comes. Instead the board has appointed a 'deputy CEO' and part of their role is to 'mentor the senior leadership team'. This doesn't strike me as standard succession planning.
