Spot on, you will see some large orders at the close sometimes buying their shares back. They are probably churning 200000 Shares on a day with decent volume and coming out with a profit of a few thousand $. That’s if the bots don’t get caught out and they lose a few thousand $ instead.

They will try and end the day with a neutral turnover, and with T+2 they only pay for loses or collect profits, the sooner they are banned the better, or instant settlement is brought in, it will destroy their manipulative little money maker, rest assured, its retail investors/traders that are losing money to enable their greedy games.
