Not an expert - but mud weight is a balancing act, and the drilling fluid does multiple jobs.
Too light and reservoir fluids can enter the well bore.
Too heavy and well bore fluids can enter reservoirs.
They also need to cool and lubricate the bit, and lift cuttings to surface.
