Electric cars are still not ready for wide use - the big manufacturers are just starting to develop vehicles. Range and charging time still remain the big hurdles for any use other than pedominately urban use for the moment.

Battery and charging technology needs to improve as does infrastructure to support electric cars.

There will also be dislocation as the transition occurs, there is significant employment surrounding fossil fuel cars and associated infrastructure - some jobs will transition but many will not - for example electric vehicle motors need nothing like the maintenance that a internal combustion engine needs.
