Yes very ruthless, like any superpower.
However taking into account the Chinese knew exactly how big and rich the asset was back before Canyon got the exploration permit, before it was further realised and brought into main stream attention and thus becoming high profile. Why not take it out by any means back then? Why wait?
The asset was up for grabs for anyone before the exploration permit was granted.
Because the Cameroon government wasn’t going to be strong armed by anyone and the state is in a vulnerable and sensitive development period that if seen to be actively colluding in corruption would be damaging to their reputation, meaning foreign expertise and money much less likely to find its way there due to a much much higher political risk.
It just doesn’t make any logical sense that we would lose the rights to the assets so blatantly while everything is in centre stage.
