I believe it is for genuinely compassionate reasons, a sense of responsbility to their hometown, and perhaps to (belatedly) make good on prior indications that there would be a trial in Australia. The number of eligible patients in Australia is a drop in the bucket compared to the US. I believe Grossman when he says that enrolments are on track. Will MSB hit the ball out of the park at the first review? I don't know. But it would be an incredible achievement.
