The inclusion of Australian trial sites is not for the ease of recruitment, it would have added a lot of logistic effort to allow the inclusion of Australian trial sites for an area without many patients to treat.
Mesoblast HQ is in Melbourne and Silviu Itescu went to med school at Monash Uni which is down the road from Monash Health and interned at Alfred. Most of his career was overseas but he would have friends from med school who are now senior clinicians across Melbourne.
Politically its also useful if the trial was also not just done in the USA if there is success and would accelerate treatment for Australians if there is experience from the usage of remstemcel-L in trials.
