Look again at my example. Dr. Bowdish said they had enrolled 30 patients. I used 20 in my example to make the math simpler. They don't know which of the 20 patients received placebo. But they do know that only 5 out of the 20 died, while another group of similar patients who were not in the trial had a 50 percent mortality rate.
Obviously not enough for any statistical significance, but wouldn't you see that difference and assume it wasn't by chance?
