Phylogica’s patent EP 1754052 was filed in 2005, meaning that this patent has been pending for 10 years. My first thought was as to whether there had been French bureaucrats involved in the process. Then I pondered whether PYC might have made the Guinness Book of Records.
It seems that the average European patent pendency is 5.24 years. Quite a few are even granted within 4 years. However PYC’s patent is not unique in its rather long gestation. In 2011 there were 2000 European patents granted that had also been pending for 10 years.
Just for the record, in 2011 the record was set by a European patent that had been filed in 1993 - yes, finally granted, just 2 years before expiry!
