I don't necessarily disagree with you on the principle that it can be a nasty fight.

But, you look at patent protection mainly as an evil, anti-competitive, practice. In pharma IP protection is what matters most, and a company must do whatever it takes to protect their interests against other actors (generic drug producers which BTW are also $billion making businesses). In other words it's a normal aspect of competition.

Governments should set the rules that will benefit the greater good. Whether they do it well is yet another debate.
