Tanis names new cabinet

PRESIDENT of the Autonomous Bougainville Government, James Tanis, officially announced his new cabinet ministers on Tuesday.
Mr Tanis said the ministerial duties had been allocated evenly to all regions, where there were four ministers represented in every region.
The first appointment is the new vice-president, Ezekiel Massat, who is also responsible for law and justice.
Six cabinet ministers from the old government retained their ministries.
His cabinet includes Glynn Tovirika as minister for veterans’ affairs, Mathias Saka as finance and planning minister, Jonathan Ngati as local level government minister, Michael Otoroa as education minister, Joseph Watawi as business and consumers affairs minister, Patrick Nisira as works minister and Laura Ampa taking charge of the women and community affairs ministry.
Member for Baubake in South Bougainville Thomas Lugabai was appointed health minister replacing Gerard Sinato, who resigned to contest the ABG presidential by-elections.
Mr Tanis replaced former communication minister Jeffery Nabuai with Hagogohe Member Robert Sawa, while Ioro Member Benedict Pisi was given the ministry for natural resources and Kongara Member Dominic Itta was appointed to the primary industry ministry, replacing Taehu Pais.
Three nominations were received for the speaker’s post – Gerard Sinato for North, Theresa Janton for Central and Andrew Miriki for the Southern region.
The election for the new speaker was conducted by secret ballot with Mr Miriki being elected with 18 votes ahead of Mr Sinato (13) and Ms Janton (five).
Mr Miriki was also sworn in straight after his victory by the Bougainville principal magistrate, David Maliku.
