Yes, mercury vapour discharge tubes (basically florescent tubes without the phosphor coating and made with different glass that is not opaque to UV) have long been used for the purpose of UV disinfection. It seems that GaN may be more cost-effective and certainly more physically robust. It may also lend itself to niche applications at small scales.
