2) Rumors surfaced in2022 that BYD would begin sodium-ion battery production in 2023, with theSeagull being the first EV to receive the new tech. However, BYD’s Seagull was launched in April with an LFP Blade Battery.

“We’re forecasting that sodium-ion will make up 9% of global EV sales by 2033. China will have the highest sodium ion battery demand, reaching over 41GWh,” said Fastmarkets’ analyst for battery raw materialsPhoebe O’Hara.
“There was a lot of interests in developing sodium battery last year when lithium price shot up. But now that lithium price fell a lot, it may not be worth switching to sodium. The move (by major battery makers) is more strategic than economical,” said a China-base lithium salt producer source.
Fastmakers' report is from 19th June 2023, before lithium prices collapsed in the second half of the year. As of today, lithium chemicals are at about 1/3 of their price when the report was released:

Lithium prices had already fell a lot, as the Chinese source mentions, from highests levels in 2022:

Since then, lithium prices favour lithium-ion batteries for most batterymakers and EVs OEMs. A niche market will wellcome sodium-ion batteries. That would serve to those projects that were caught in without the possibility to move back to lithium.
Let’s see what happens now that pricing war has begun. The BYD Seagull costs now $9,700 USD and offers 300 km range (LFPbattery).
