My understanding is some rock bounces sound back strongly , and some rock (guessing the softer rock absorbs the sound ) The soft rock in the case of Tropicana is on top of the ore body (hanging wall) so acts like a pathfinder mineral ie when looking for gold sometimes you look for the arsenic rather than the gold to find the gold , like following the rainbow to the gold .
by following the soft rock down from the signature given off by the sound (or lack of sound in this case) you can assume there is likely to be ore under the soft rock ( either down dip or along strike) even though it has not been drilled out yet
To further prove the soft rock is on top of the mineralised rock (ore ) they see the soft rock in the core samples above the mineralised rock.
