It sounds like poor geological logging by the sound of it. Someone saw some 'paint gold' on the uncut core, misinterpreted it as granular gold ("35 specks of gold identified in this section of core" - BBX 12 October 2015 release), and didn't have the sense not to shout it from the rooftops.
The laboratory comment noting "11 gold grains, ten of 'lamellar' format" tends to confirm that there is paint gold present: micron thick flakes of gold that may look very spectacular on the surfaces of uncut core, but have no significant volume and do not assay to much at all.
Either that or they were logging bronze scrapings and smearing from the drill bit matrix as it gouged its way through all that hard silica, which would be naiive to say the least, but does happen.
I thought the crucifixion was Easter, not Christmas?
