It would seem to give the conspiracy theorists more ammunition, regarding the potential company maneuverings and dealings leading up to the low ball NST offer.
I expect that we will never know, however, as you point out, the shallow depth of drilling is particularly unusual, though there may be legitimate reasons for it.
It will be interesting to follow NST post takeover, to see what drilling they do, and what results they get from the EAR projects.
