Out of curiosity, how does the legal process regarding land...

Out of curiosity, how does the legal process regarding land access work down in that part of the world? I've visited the areas around lake Hume before and it's a very beautiful area. I can assume the locals would feel the same way and there might be people concerned about mining in what appears to be an agricultural/touristy area and how would this affect relationships with government/the company's plans to minimize impact so all stakeholders are happy.

Not a nimby post, genuinely curious how this goes down in VIC. If anyone knows details of how mining operations usually go in the area I would love to hear more.
