My recollection is that WP was never going to stay for a long period. He had a short contract and was convinced to stay on. At this stage he was not "inheriting a train wreck" he was stepping up to a challenge that he must have been fully aware of. No doubt the lofty salary was a nice enticement and he had the opportunity to utilise the specific skill set that his CV proclaimed. Retrospect is a fine thing and tomorrow will be very telling if he really can drag this out of the train wreck that he has watched over.
I really hope he can.
