But there are herds up in the hills. Just haven't met any locals that hunt them as yet. I would love to get some fresh venison.

Most populations are out there as ex-deer farmers released their herds once they realised they couldn't make a profit. Local abattoirs found them difficult to slaughter and transport costs to Victoria were prohibitive so, all the little deers were left to forage for themselves. Plus they are not domesticated and do not travel well.
